Senex Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva: time proves us right
The Senex Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva, 2019 vintage, is officially sold out. First of all, then, we want to say a single word: thank you. Indeed, we sold out thanks to those who trusted us; the customers, restaurants and wine lovers who chose a bottle from a small family winery in Matelica.
Why it is called Senex
Senex, in Latin, does not only mean “old”. It means the elder who has lived: experience, wisdom, everything that only time can give. That is why it is the right name for a wine that, over the years, does not grow old but matures.
How Senex is made
Senex is made only in the best vintages, from an early-harvest selection of grapes from our oldest vineyard, Vigneto Fogliano, planted in 1978. Moreover, it rests a long time on the lees in cement tanks and, afterwards, ages in bottle. We make only a few bottles, all numbered. Here, in fact, everything takes time — and time, for us, is never an ending.
What critics say about the 2019
And time has proved us right. In the Decanter Verdicchio panel tasting (April 2026), in particular, the Senex 2019 was ranked “Highly recommended” with 93 points and a drinking window through 2038: aromas of citrus, sea spray and green olive, a creamy yet lively palate and a long, savoury, mineral finish. In addition, it earned Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, 95 points Falstaff, 93+ Vinous and 92 Wine Spectator. However, we carry these recognitions with humility and share them with everyone who works the vineyard and the cellar every day.
From 15 September 2026: welcome, 2021 vintage
Now it is time to let the 2019 go and prepare for a new vintage. Therefore, from 15 September 2026, we welcome the new Senex Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva, 2021 vintage: the same vineyard, the same care, the same time that keeps working for us.
