Here’s a wine for those willing to venture further off the beaten track. The 2009 Verdicchio di Matelica
Riserva Senex opens to candied aromas of preserved lemon, sun-dried apricot and peach syrup.
Verdicchio is not known (in a commercial sense) for these aromas, but Bisci’s non-interventionist and
natural wine approach brings them out. The wine shows medium build in the mouth and promises
years more of aging ahead. Only 2,660 bottles were produced. The folks at Bisci do a great job with the
Verdicchio grape in particular. Compared to their peers, these whites promise a much longer drinking
window. These age-worthy wines fall within the “natural” winemaking school and have been enjoying a
steady cult following in recent years.
