Wines of the Marche: Delicious Age-worthy Whites, Solid Reds

2015 Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva Senex – 93
Deep straw yellow with green highlights. Enticing aromas of almond paste, chlorophyll, mint and apple. Enters smooth and rich, then turns more fleshy and chewy, but the tannic bite is noble and provides welcome support to the super-ripe but fresh orchard and stone fruit flavours. Closes long and clean, this is a real knockout. It’ll be interesting to compare this wine to the 17 Vigneto Fogliano in six to eight years, as each is a standout Verdicchio wine, but each showcases a different aspect of the grape and wine. Drinking window: now-2028.
