While most<br \/>\nexamples are 100% Verdicchio (DOC regulations<br \/>\nrequire 85% minimum Verdicchio), the<br \/>\ncharacteristics of these wines are quite varied,<br \/>\nthanks to a series of factors including soil, climate<br \/>\nand elevation.<br \/>\nThe Castelli di Jesi zone is located in northcentral Marche,<br \/>\nwhile Matelica is in the western centre of the region, close to the Apennine<br \/>\nMountains that traverse this part of the region, near<br \/>\nthe border with Umbria.<br \/>\n&#8216;The greatest difference between Matelica and Jesi, is the terrains.<br \/>\nJesi is very rich in clay and skeletal<br \/>\ndeposits, while Matelica is richer in minerals.<br \/>\nAlso Jesi is more open to the sea, while Matelica is<br \/>\nan inland territory, where the influence of the<br \/>\nmountains can be felt.\u2019<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n\u2018<strong>The valley of Matelica<\/strong> is a closed valley,<br \/>\nwith the Apennines on one side and on the other,<br \/>\nthe mountain range of san Vicino. It does not feel<br \/>\nthe effect of marine influences, rather it is a<br \/>\ncontinental climate with very cold winters with<br \/>\nsnow and very hot summers.\u2019<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n&#8216;<em><strong>the Verdicchios from Matelica have a great structure<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>on the palate, but with stronger acidic and saline<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>components with respect to Jesi<\/strong><\/em>.\u2019<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nAs for the grape itself ..<br \/>\nthe \u2018vibrant acidity and high<br \/>\ncontent of polyphenols that combine to result in<br \/>\nwines that last many years\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018in Verdicchio, one can find powerful antixodants such<br \/>\nas etil-caffeato [ethyl caffeate], which is similar to<br \/>\nresveratrol in red wines.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In both zones, structure in the wines is provided<br \/>\nby the combination of vineyard altitude and vine<br \/>\nage. \u2018About 90% of Verdicchio is produced on hills<br \/>\nthat are situated between 280m and 600m above<br \/>\nsea level,\u2019<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nFlavour profiles vary from one area to the next,<br \/>\noften with notable differences. For example, the<br \/>\nCupramontana zone, which is home to several<br \/>\ntop producers ..<\/p>\n<p>is the oldest for Verdicchio production. This area is<br \/>\none of the closest to the sea as well as having many<br \/>\nof the highest vineyard plantings.<\/p>\n<p>.. <strong>Verdicchio from Cupramontana<\/strong> offers aromas of yellow fruit<br \/>\n(especially pears) along with notes of anise and<br \/>\nwild fennel.
