\nThere are two DOC zones for Verdicchio in Marche:
\nVerdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, the more famous of
\nthe two, and Verdicchio di Matelica. While most
\nexamples are 100% Verdicchio (DOC regulations
\nrequire 85% minimum Verdicchio), the
\ncharacteristics of these wines are quite varied,
\nthanks to a series of factors including soil, climate
\nand elevation.
\nThe Castelli di Jesi zone is located in northcentral Marche,
\nwhile Matelica is in the western centre of the region, close to the Apennine
\nMountains that traverse this part of the region, near
\nthe border with Umbria.
\n‘The greatest difference between Matelica and Jesi, is the terrains.
\nJesi is very rich in clay and skeletal
\ndeposits, while Matelica is richer in minerals.
\nAlso Jesi is more open to the sea, while Matelica is
\nan inland territory, where the influence of the
\nmountains can be felt.\u2019

\n\u2018The valley of Matelica<\/strong> is a closed valley,
\nwith the Apennines on one side and on the other,
\nthe mountain range of san Vicino. It does not feel
\nthe effect of marine influences, rather it is a
\ncontinental climate with very cold winters with
\nsnow and very hot summers.\u2019

\none of the closest to the sea as well as having many
\nof the highest vineyard plantings.<\/p>\n
\n(especially pears) along with notes of anise and
\nwild fennel. This is a contrast to other zones in Jesi
\n(such as Staffolo<\/strong> or Apiro<\/strong>) where perfumes of
\ntropical and candied fruit are more representative.
\nWhile stainless steel is the most common ageing
\nvessel, a few producers use cement tanks for
\nfermentation and\/or maturing their wines.
